Violence and Aggression in the Workplace

The Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1992, places on the statute book certain obligations for both the employer and the employee. It brought in the term "Risk Assessment" and for once violence and aggression in the workplace to the fore. Prior to 1992, there had been much Health and Safety legislation and most of it dealt very well with matters relating to the Health, Welfare and Safety of employees within the workplace, however there was nothing other than current United Kingdom enactments to deal with violence within the workplace.

Faced with an increase in violence against employees, the Government of the day, in consultation with various interested parties, staff associations, employers and the Health and Safety Executive enacted the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1992. For the first time employers were strongly advised under the Act to ensure that ALL their employees received training in learning to recognise and deal with violence within the workplace.

The definition for workplace violence was simplified to state that, an employee is subjected to violence within the workplace where they, the employee is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances surrounding their work.
